I recently moved back to Oklahoma City from San Diego after living and working there for ten years. When I tell people I moved here from Southern California, almost without exception I get a look of disbelief and bewilderment with standard question “Why would anybody do that?” That’s when I give them the following reasons I moved back:
Oklahoma’s Metamorphosis – Oklahoma has completely transformed itself in the decade I was gone; it’s literally a different place. The economy is diversified and expanding. Cultural activities are varied and affordable. But even more important, we have a tremendous amount of momentum that will move the state forward for decades.
Career Opportunities – I landed a job as president of a rapidly growing bank that’s expanding nationally. It’s a career opportunity that I would put on scale with anything available on the West Coast. Oklahoma has plenty of openings in a number of job categories. Wages are up and there is an abundance of opportunities for hardworking, experienced professionals.
Improved Standard of Living – It’s relatively easy to move from an expensive market and keep a similar level of income in Oklahoma. Since it cost so much less to live in Oklahoma, the result has been a significant improvement in my family’s standard of living. Better yet, we’ll have a better standard of living here when we retire.
Family and Friends – It’s good to be back with family and friends. The people in Oklahoma are genuinely warm and have a sincere since of caring about them. It’s refreshing to be around them everyday.
I am glad we made the move; things have turned out even better than I ever expected.
