I grew up in Ardmore but had a powerful urge to see the world right out of High School – so I set off for the bright lights and big cities of Southern California. Los Angeles is where I began my long career in the telecommunications industry.
When my son was ten we decided to try to get closer to our family and back to our Oklahoma roots. It was strange how having a child and emotional maturity made me appreciate the simpler, cleaner, less stressful way of life and tremendous beauty offered in rural Oklahoma. I wanted my son to have the experience of growing up in Oklahoma. After we relocated, he loved being able to hunt, trap, fish, ride his ATV in the wide open spaces of our family ranch near Ardmore.
I didn’t want to lose my seniority, experience and good job with the Bell System so I obtained an intra-state transfer to land as close as possible to family in Ardmore. At that time it meant moving from California to the Dallas area. About a year and half later I was able to get back to Ardmore and was able to stay with my Bell career. For the next 24 years I worked for Bell all over Oklahoma. Those job assignments in 5 different Oklahoma cities and my affiliation with Leadership Oklahoma, as well as our numerous bicycling trips all over the U.S., Canada and Europe – gave me a keen appreciation of Oklahoma.
What a great place to call home; to live, work and be part of a community where you really can make a difference. Coming back to my roots in Oklahoma was the best decision I ever made.
