When I graduated from OU in the early 90’s, I assumed I needed leave to maximize my opportunities. So I did. Over the next ten years, I lived in New York City, Chicago and Las Vegas. I moved back to Oklahoma in between each stop, and the story was the same: My ambition took me out of each state each time.
I returned to Oklahoma City in November 2001 to prepare for graduate school. In 2003, I interned on Wall Street for a major investment bank, and assumed that I would return after graduation. However, Oklahoma City was a different place than the one I had left in the past. There was a new sense of entrepreneurship; a renewal of the pioneering spirit. I remember visiting the Oil Pioneers Plaza in front of the Noble Museum of Natural History in Norman, and seeing the stories of our state’s founders under my feet. I wanted to take part in a renewal of that spirit. Additionally, I wanted my new twin daughters to grow up in a place where they would be exposed to the values that helped shape me: hospitality, honesty, integrity.
Now, I’m on the front lines of the next wave of Oklahoma’s growth. I help Oklahoma innovators grow their ideas into businesses that drive our economy and employ our best and brightest citizens. I sometimes think about what might have been if I’d left again, and I smile. I’m home, and I’m working to help Oklahoma attract and retain a new generation of dreamers. I’ve never had it so good.
